support art in Utah
The Salt Lake City Council might not approve the rezone needed for the project. Zoning currently supports hotel use, but not a hotel of the size required to support adequate numbers of visiting art buyers, galleries, production studios, specialized receiving and storage spaces, and program support spaces.
The Salt Lake City Council will vote soon on a rezone that the project needs to be viable on this well-connected site near the City Library!

The Planning Commission sadly gave this Art Deco, art-focused hotel a negative recommendation. The City Council might not vote to approve the project. And they might vote very soon. The next meeting with this project on the agenda is 7 April, 2026.
- Western artists have a relative disadvantage in market access compared to east coast artists, but no less quality.
- This rezone provides for the unmet needs of local artists in systems, facilities and professional support for a robust and trustworthy art-investment market.
- Zoning currently supports a hotel, but not of the size needed to house the mixed-use services to make this proposal possible.
- The decision is entirely up to the elected members of the City Council.

Western arts
… scene is gallery focused with significantly lower chance of an artists’ works going to auction.
2.7 million artists
… live west of the Mississippi, but over 90% of art sales in the U.S. take place in New York City where just over 100,000 artists live and work.

“in the West, WE HAVE no shortage of artists who go to work everyday and produce work of great quality. We need an increase in supporting professions, systems and specialized facilities for local artists and their investors to realize the benefits of their work. Ana Villacampa’s research is demonstrating potential and strength behind the hotel-anchored cultural programming. We plan on a few unique solutions, and many things that are staples of a robust art investing market.
it is a great moment take advantage of the art market shift toward digital auction spaces. We don’t see a threat in AI advancements on the one hand, what we see is a renewal coming about of people wanting real physical objects with real human intention and feeling behind them. and On the other hand, the digital auction house will bring more democracy to the sales of real human art. let’s take advantage of the shift by increasing the visibility of the art being produced by western artists now.”
